What you are looking at
English walnut is the timber people fall in love with in the workshop. The figure is extraordinary and a book-matched pair of walnut doors — two consecutive boards from the same log, opened like the pages of a book so the figure mirrors across the join — is about as good as cabinetwork gets.
How it ages
It lightens, which surprises almost everybody. Walnut mellows toward a warmer, softer brown over years rather than darkening, and strong daylight speeds it up. Worth knowing before you match it to something.
It is the softest of the four we use and shows a knock most readily. It comes in narrower boards too, so a wide run costs more and wants more careful setting out.
