Timber and Book-Matching
Two decisions made before anything is cut govern most of how a cabinet will look in thirty years: how the boards were sawn from the log, and how they were set out across the doors. Quarter sawn oak and careful book-matching cost more at the rack and are invisible on an invoice — and they are most of the difference between furniture and joinery.

Quarter-sawn, and why it costs more
A log can be cut two ways. Through and through — straight across, board after board — which is fast and wastes almost nothing. Or radially, so that the growth rings meet the face of each board at a steep angle. The second is quarter-sawing, it wastes a great deal more timber, it takes longer, and it costs more.
You get two things for the money.
Stability. Timber moves across its width with changes in humidity, and quarter-sawn boards move roughly half as much as through-and-through ones. On a wide door in a house with underfloor heating and a dry winter, that is the difference between a shut line that holds and a shut line that opens.
Figure. In oak, quarter-sawing exposes the medullary ray — the silvery flecking that runs across the grain and that people recognise in good English oak without knowing its name. It is the thing that makes an oak cabinet look expensive from across a room.

Book-matching
Take two consecutive boards from the same log, open them like the pages of a book, and the figure mirrors across the join. Do that across a pair of cabinet doors and the grain reads as one continuous piece with a centre line, rather than as two doors that happen to be next to each other.
It requires the boards to be kept together from the moment they arrive, selected as a set, and set out before anything is cut to size. It cannot be done retrospectively and it cannot be done from a rack of mixed stock — which is exactly why so few cabinets have it, and why it is the single most reliable tell of a made piece.
Where it matters most:
- A pair of doors — the classic application, and the one that gives a cabinet a centre.
- A run of drawer fronts — set out in sequence from one board so the grain runs down the chest rather than jumping between drawers. See Wellington chests.
- Panelled sides — where a cabinet stands proud of a wall and its side is visible.
- A fall-front or a lifting top — where a large single surface is the piece.
Book-matching costs more in timber, because the boards have to be bought as a set and some of the set will not be used, and more in setting-out time. On figured walnut it can be a significant part of the material cost. It is also the thing clients point at.
The timbers we use

Moisture, and the thing nobody tells you
Timber is hygroscopic: it takes up and gives off moisture until it is in equilibrium with the air around it, and it changes dimension as it does. This is not a defect, it cannot be prevented, and every good piece of joinery is built to accommodate it rather than to resist it.
Two consequences worth knowing before you commission anything.
The house you are putting it in matters. A cabinet built for a cottage with solid walls and gentle heating is in a different environment from one going into a new build with underfloor heating running at 21 degrees all winter. Tell us which, because it changes how panels are sized and how much room they are given to move.
Panels float, frames do not. This is the reason traditional joinery is frame-and-panel: the frame is dimensionally stable along its length, and the panel sits within it free to move without splitting anything. A slab door glued up solid across its width is a door that will crack. Everything we make is built on that principle, including the timber cladding on a firearms door, which has steel behind it and still has to be allowed to move.
Where we use engineered substrates
Rarely, deliberately, and we will always tell you where.
There are two situations where an engineered core is the better answer rather than the cheaper one:
- A wide painted panel. Paint shows movement more than any other finish, and a wide solid panel under paint will eventually telegraph its joints. An engineered core stays flat, and since nobody will see the timber, nothing is lost.
- Behind a concealed leaf. A concealed door has to keep its shut lines for decades while everything around it moves seasonally. Stability there is the whole trick.
What we do not do is use an engineered core and describe the piece as solid timber. If it is there, it is on the drawing and it is in the specification.
Selecting for a particular piece
Boards are chosen for the job rather than pulled from whatever is nearest, which sounds obvious and is not universal.
- The doors are chosen firstThey are what the eye lands on, so they get the best of the timber and the book-match.
- Then the visible sides and the corniceMatched to the doors in colour and figure.
- Then rails, stiles and mouldingsStraight-grained stock, chosen for stability rather than figure — a moulding wants to be quiet.
- Then the parts nobody seesSound, dry, honest timber. Not showy, and not rubbish either.
- Colour is matched across the whole pieceOak varies enormously board to board. Getting a cabinet to read as one colour before any finish goes on is a selection job, not a staining job.
Sourcing
We buy through established timber merchants, kiln-dried and to a moisture content appropriate to a heated interior, and we stick timber in the workshop to acclimatise rather than machining it the day it arrives.
On the question of origin: we will tell you where a particular parcel came from if you ask, and we will not make claims about certification schemes on a website. If provenance matters to you for a specific commission, raise it at the outset and we will source accordingly and tell you exactly what we have bought.
Offcuts and waste go into the workshop’s biomass heating rather than a skip. It is a small thing, but it is our own timber heating our own benches.
Questions we are asked
What does quarter-sawn mean?
Boards cut radially from the log rather than straight through it. It wastes considerably more timber and costs more; in return the boards move roughly half as much across their width, are far less prone to cupping, and in oak show the silvery medullary ray flecking.
What is book-matching?

Which timber should I choose?
English oak for almost any house, and the best timber for antiquing. Walnut where the piece is the focus of the room and you want it striking. Mahogany in a Georgian or Regency interior, particularly French-polished. Hardwood prepared for paint where the room is painted.
Will the timber move?
Yes — all timber does, and good joinery is built to accommodate it rather than resist it. Frames are stable, panels float within them. Tell us what the house is like, because a cottage with gentle heating and a new build with underfloor heating are different environments and change how panels are sized.
Do you use MDF or engineered board?
Rarely and deliberately — behind wide painted panels, where paint would otherwise telegraph joints, and behind concealed leaves where shut lines must hold for decades. Where it is used it is on the drawing and in the specification. We do not use it and call the piece solid timber.
Where does your timber come from?
Established timber merchants, kiln-dried to a moisture content suited to a heated interior, and stuck in the workshop to acclimatise before machining. If provenance matters for a particular commission, raise it at the outset and we will source accordingly and tell you exactly what we have bought.
Quarter sawn oak and why it moves less
Timber shrinks and swells across the growth rings roughly twice as much as it does along them. That single fact is why quarter sawn oak — boards cut so the rings run more or less perpendicular to the face — is worth paying for.

Halving the movement halves the size of every gap, every proud joint and every split you will ever see in the piece. It also gives oak its medullary ray figure — the silver flecking across the face — which is a by-product rather than the point, but it is the reason quarter sawn oak looks the way it does in a Georgian room.
It costs roughly 40–60% more per cubic metre than through-and-through, because the sawyer gets fewer wide boards out of the same log. On a cabinet that is a few hundred pounds, and it is the last place we would economise.
Moisture content, and the thing nobody tells you
We machine at 10–12% moisture content, which is right for a normally heated English house. A room with underfloor heating will pull timber down to 6–8%, and a room that is unheated from October to April will push it to 14–16%. Both are survivable if we know in advance, because the panel clearances change. Neither is survivable if we do not, which is why we ask about heating at survey and why it appears on the drawing.
Sourcing
Through UK merchants with documented chains of custody, with FSC certified stock specified where the species and grade allow. Oak is straightforward. Walnut is not — much of the best European walnut comes through channels that have never been certified, and we would rather tell you that than put a logo on a page.
