Bespoke Gun Cabinet or Fitted Gun Room? How to Choose
The right answer is not always the largest answer. A bespoke cabinet, a wall of fitted cabinets or a steel-lined room can each be sensible, depending on the collection, the building and the way the space needs to work.
Start with the collection
Begin with a general list: what you own, what stays cased, what has a scope mounted, what is unusually long or heavy, and what you expect to buy in the next few years. That is enough to start the design conversation. Do not send serial numbers, certificate numbers, copies of certificates or exact security details through a website enquiry.
When a cabinet is the proportionate answer
A properly anchored cabinet is usually the sensible route when the collection is relatively contained, the room is already finished and there is no need to alter the building. It can be built into existing panelling or furniture, with the interior drawn around the guns rather than a catalogue layout.
When a wall of cabinets makes sense
A run of fitted cabinets can give a larger collection more room without turning an entire room into a building project. It is particularly useful where the house is finished but there is a suitable wall in a study, dressing room, boot room or utility space.
When a fitted gun room is justified
A fitted room may be appropriate when a room is being built or substantially reordered, when the collection needs a dedicated working space, or when cabinets no longer provide a sensible arrangement. It involves more builder’s work: the opening, structure, first-fix services, steel lining and a firearms door all need to be coordinated.
The installation question
Ask who is responsible for the structure, the opening, the fixings, the making good and the handover information. A cabinet or door should be anchored into suitable structure; the correct solution depends on the building and must be agreed with the relevant firearms licensing department.
Ask for advice, not a product
A good maker should be willing to recommend the smaller solution when it is the right one. The objective is secure, well-planned storage that belongs in the house, not the largest possible commission.
